CEIT welcomes Dr. Tallada

The CEIT family welcomes its newest faculty member in the person of Dr. Jasper G. Tallada, a Balik Scientist of the Department of Science and Technology.
Dr. Tallada worked as a research assistant at IRRI for almost five years and a faculty member and department chairperson at the College of Engineering and Agro-Industrial Technology, UPLB. He was a research associate at Kansas State University and prior to his assignment as DOST-BSP grantee, a research engineer at the US Department of Agriculture - Agricultural Research Service, Manhattan, Kansas where he worked and published several papers on Near Infrared (NIR) spectroscopy, machine vision, air quality and related fields. He is also into computer programming, developing database systems, mathematical modeling, and establishing hardware and software systems for analog and digital electronics applications.
Sir Jay finished BS in Agricultural Engineering (Agricultural Process Engineering and Technology) at UPLB; Master of Engineering Science in Development Technology – Agricultural Engineering at the International Development Technology Centre, Faculty of Engineering, University of Melbourne, Australia; and PhD in Agricultural Sciences – Agricultural Engineering at the United Graduate School for Agricultural Sciences, Kagoshima University through the Monbukagakusho Scholarship of the Japanese Government.
Dr. Tallada is the leader of a PCAARRD-DOST-funded project on development of an NIR spectroscopy instrument. He can be reached at the National Coffee Research, Development and Extension Center.

Echo seminar on module writing conducted

The College of Engineering and Information Technology resumed its seminar series by holding the Echo Seminar on Module Writing at the CEIT Conference Room on 16 February 2012 at 4-6 p.m. The activity aimed to share with the faculty members the presentations given during the Seminar-Workshop on Module Writing held on 19 October and 2 November 2011 which was attended by representatives from the different colleges and campuses of the University.
Mr. Willie C. Buclatin and Prof. Aileen V. Rocillo, chairperson of the Department of Industrial Engineering and Technology and dean of the College, respectively, discussed the following topics: Instructional Modules Leveling-off, Clear and Effective Use of Language, and Visual Design. Dr. Leyma L. Cero, member of the University Textbook and Publications Board, explained the functions and implementing guidelines of the Board as well as the criteria for evaluation of modules and laboratory manuals. In the open forum, issues on publication of instructional materials were raised and clarified.
Dr. David L. Cero, coordinator of the College for Research, Development and Extension in cooperation with the RDE unit coordinators, facilitated the conduct of the seminar series.

AEs, 2nd runner-up in PAEStigan
The Cavite State University (CvSU) team bagged the second runner-up in the PAEStigan: The 2nd Inter-Luzon State Colleges and Universities PAES (Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards) Quiz Contest.
The contest was held at the Electrical Engineering Building, University of the Philippines Los BaƱos, College, Laguna on 28 January 2012. Fifth year agricultural engineering students, namely: Kelvin Michael Crystal, Loriel Yala and Analyn Sagana composed the CvSU team. They were accompanied by Engr. Ervin F. Papa as coach.
Out of 15 participating state colleges and universities, the Camarines Norte State College, Benguet State University and CvSU emerged as the champion, 1st runner-up and 2nd runner-up and were awarded with trophies and cash prizes amounting to P50,000, P30,000 and P20,000, respectively.
Also, Loriel Yala topped the written examination and was awarded with a medal.
The UP Society of Agricultural Engineering Students (UP SAGES), in partnership with the Philippine Society of Agricultural Engineers-Region IV Chapter (PSAE-IV), Agricultural Machinery Testing and Evaluation Center (AMTEC), and the Institute of Agricultural Engineering (CEAT-IAE), sponsored the activity. The activity aimed to: 1) challenge the proficiency of agricultural engineering students with the Philippine Agricultural Engineering Standards (PAES), 2) expose the students to the actual application and development of these standards, and 3) promote camaraderie between and among participants.

2 programs, awarded Level III status
The Accrediting Agency of Chartered Colleges and Universities in the Philippines (AACCUP), Inc. awarded two of the curricular program offerings of the College of Engineering and Information Technology with Level III accreditation status. These are BS Agricultural Engineering and BS Civil Engineering.
The BS Computer Engineering program will be re-visited in the areas of Curriculum, Library and Administration to qualify for the Level III status. BS Computer Science and BS Information Technology were awarded Level II Re-accredited and Level I Accredited status, respectively. Meanwhile, the BS Electrical Engineering program received the Candidate status.
The Level III accredited programs will undergo the second phase of evaluation before the year ends.
The accreditation survey visit to the six programs of the College and 10 other programs of the University was held on 6-8 December 2011.
